Red Hat Cygwin is an open-source compatibility layer and toolset that brings a Unix-like environment to Microsoft Windows. It provides a POSIX runtime (cygwin1.dll) along with a wide range of GNU and other open-source packages—shells, utilities, compilers, and libraries—so developers can build, port, and run software that expects a Linux/Unix interface on Windows.
With its lightweight installer and package manager, you can add exactly the tools you need, from Bash and SSH to GCC and make. Cygwin interoperates with the Windows filesystem and tools, making it a solid choice for scripting, automation, cross-platform build pipelines, and keeping development workflows consistent across Windows and Linux. Note that Cygwin does not run native Linux binaries; applications must be compiled for the Cygwin environment. Cygwin is a Red Hat–sponsored, community-driven project and is free and open source.
